Carsten Pieper During yesterday's great Calexico concert in Dortmund Joey Burns urged us to go for this singer-songwriter wherever we can. As these postcards already lingered in the wishlist, I got no choice come Bandcamp Friday the next day. Who am I to argue with Joey himself? ;-) Favorite track: In The Light.

I'll blur the lines if you won't I'll take the time if you don't To call you my friend in the morning sun We never started so we'll never be done Just like an old song, the water is wide... But that doesn't mean it's impassable Sometimes blue is just laughable We cross the bridge if we get to it We watch the waves if our feet get wet Sometimes there's only one way to go... In the light As we walked over the sparkling sands The wind was blowing and I watched your hands Moving like you had something to say You didn’t, but I heard you anyway Just a mile or so from the undertow... In the light Counting the gulls over the parking lot Sometimes leaving costs a lot Leaving for good or just for a while So many mornings in your sweet smile Happy and sad, as strong as on earth In the light...

I'm going back to Rosine I'm going back to Rosine I'm going back to Rosine I know what I'm going for I have been watching I have been watching I have been watching And I want you more There is a sadness There is a sadness There is a sadness As big as any sea I'm going back to Rosine I'm going back to Rosine I'm going back to Rosine Take these reins from me Ain't you from Rosine Ain't you from Rosine Ain't you from Rosine I know what I'm going for I have been waiting I have been waiting I have been waiting And I want you more Broken branches softly Broken branches softly Broken branches softly Underneath my feet Fog on the mountain Fog on the mountain Fog on the mountain Where earth and heaven meet Going back to Rosine Going back to Rosine Going back to Rosine I know what I'm going for

Hear the bells Beneath the waves Among the ruins And the graves Out in the oaks Under the pines Anchor and moon Pulling the tides Once Again I was the keeper Of the boundary land I lost my way In the stones and sand He promised a kiss For the one who waits While the sea swept in Through the open gates Once Again They called me drunkard They called my name And they still curse me In the wind and rain It was my fault But it was my fate And the sea will sweep in Through the open gate Once again And though the road Was paved with gold It was only his hand I wanted to hold You'll see the faces Upon the coins But you'll find the well In the water, boys Once again They called me drunkard They called my name And they still curse me In the wind and rain It was my fault But it was my fate And the sea will sweep in Through the open gate Once again

How soon can you get here? How soon do you dare? I'm in need of some company In need of some care As the world rolls and tumbles As the edges fray How soon can you get here? How long can you stay? Here and now I vow To hold on and let go Don't you know… Don't you know… I want to make my friends happy I want to make my people proud I want to turn and face the music When it's quiet...when it's loud Here and now I vow To hold on and let go Don't you know… Don't you know… I don't need to be rescued Protected or redeemed But won't you come and visit Just like I dreamed Here and now I vow To hold on and let go Don't you know… Don't you know… In a room full of rainbows Empty chairs and flowers How soon can you get here To waltz me through the hours? And we'll make our friends happy We'll make the world proud We'll turn and face the music And go waltzing through the hours... Here and now I vow To hold on and let go Don't you know… Don't you know…

Phone is talking My head is buzzin' Wheels are turning My mind is fuzzin' Don't want to Don't want to go home Bluebells & daisies Barstools & bottles Daydreams & maybes Street tracker throttles Don't want to Don't want to go home & baby I ain't gonna be a whippin' stone I'm runnin’ wild & my love has grown Don't want to go home... I like it here & I like it there Maybe I just Like it everywhere Don't want to Don't want to go home Highways & tunnels Hotels & trains They say the road Gets in your veins Don't want to Don't want to go home & baby I ain't gonna be a whippin' stone I'm running wild & my love has grown It ain't because of me It ain't because of you Sometimes it's false Sometimes it's true Don't want to Don't want to go home Tomorrow's another day I bet we might Just find our way But for tonight Don't want to Don't want to go home

Why did you want my love But you don't want my name? Wish I hadn't stopped my horse To get that drink of rain How come we move so fast But some things never change? Wish I was a satellite Over the open range... How long, baby Should I wait for you? If I wish with all my wells Will my wish come true? One two, buckled my shoe Then I lost my step I woke up in Birmingham With this ribbon around my neck Red dirt, magnolias Kudzu on the trees Once I was a wildflower Calling to the bees How long, baby Should I wait for you? If I wish with all my wells Will my wish come true? Through the woods and back again Night can get so long Wish I was that starry sky Inside your pretty song How long, baby Should I wait for you? If I wish with all my wells Will my wish come true?

Take me home To my feather bed Take me home Let me rest my head And please don't pretend 'Cause there's nothing worse Than a false hearted friend And we're all going out in the end... Take me over The beautiful water Please don't mistake me For another Cause I've done some things I did not intend And I've done some things I never will mend And we're all going out in the end... It's my time And I'm gonna take it... It's my time I don't know if I'll make it Take my hand For a little while Take my hand Won't you give me a smile And if you see my mama Won't you give her a kiss Tell her she's the one I'll always miss 'Cause we're all going out like this... Take me home To my feather bed Take me home Let me rest my head And please don't pretend 'Cause there's nothing worse Than a false hearted friend And we're all going out in the end…

You're on your way now What's the matter with me Is what's the matter with you & the birds keep singing Even when the sky ain't blue Day after day now Dogs at the back door They'll be there a while & the moon will return After many a mile I think you're okay now Hubcaps shining In a setting sun A lover's work Is never done You're on your way now

Turns out I'm not all I thought I was Maybe it's all for nothing or just because Time flies, yes I know that's true Maybe I think too much, but I didn't think this through Got on my high horse, went downtown In the mood for love I took a look around 3 in the morning, just those boys on the street Making down a pallet out of cardboard and concrete Running all the roads...how far can we go?...running all the roads Up the mountain with my friend Talking god and nature and blazing 'till the end You have to believe in something, even to pretend How close to the break can you take the bend? Running all the roads...how far can we go?...running all the roads Now I'm in a hotel reading hotel reviews Comparing soap dishes and fluorescent blues Wishing like hell I was done paying my dues Yeah, I just might need me different shoes... Running all the roads...how far can we go?...running all the roads You closed the door, you slandered my name I'd like to say it's a crying shame But I know you brother, you didn't mean a thing And I'll always think of you when I hear the coyote sing Running all the roads...how far can we go?...running all the roads All these hold ups can't break me down No, I'm already broken anyhow In the land of the free anything goes Just how much can we take? Nobody knows... Running all the roads...how far can we go?...running all the roads Running all the roads...how far can we go?...running all the roads

about

It was in hotel rooms across the country that Pieta Brown wrote most of the songs on her gorgeous album, 'Postcards.' Like any touring musician, she was on the road to survive, balancing the rewards of performing music for a living with the challenges of trying to stay connected to loved ones and other artists while in motion. So, when she was finally stationed at home, she decided to send out some postcards. These weren't just any postcards, though, these were musical postcards, the stripped-down, acoustic shells of new songs she'd written while traveling, and she sent them to folks like Mark Knopfler, Calexico, Mason Jennings, David Lindley, Carrie Rodriguez, Caitlin Canty, and The Pines among others. Her instructions to each were simple: write back.
